Carry The Load brings Memorial May to Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) – Memorial May is in full swing for Carry The Load. And after making their way down the east coast, the grassroots non-profit stopped in Pensacola for a morning full of events to honor the fallen.

“We love coming to Pensacola. It’s a strong military town which we believe in,” said Judd Word, Assistant Relay Manager. “It also has a lot of ties with people who have lost loved ones that have served in the military as well as served the community as first responders.”

The day started bright and early with the first of three remembrance walks starting from the Home Depot on Davis Highway and ending over five miles later at Veteran’s Memorial Park which was the perfect stop along the way.

“It’s important for us to be a good host for these organizations, it’s all about raising awareness and remembering those who were fallen,” said Veteran’s Memorial Park board member Alex Boykin.

Before stepping off again, several people came to learn more about Carry The Load and their mission to remember the fallen. Many came to walk in honor of their loved ones

“I’m actually carrying the load for my grandfathers who served in the U.S. Army. One of them came to this country and immediately joined the U.S. Army,” said Sean Ulichney. “It’s a way of representing their spirit, their courage and providing some honor for what they did for our country. It really is the ultimate sacrifice.”

The group walked to Blue Wahoos Stadium sharing stories about their loved ones which Judd Word with Carry The Load says is a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

“This is as much healing and emotional for us as it is for the participants,” added Word. “To come out here and remember the men and women who put their lives on the line. We just want the families to know we’re still out here; we still remember them.”

Not only is this about remembering those who didn’t make it home, but it’s also about supporting those who did. 93% of the money raised this month goes to their non-profit partners which helps veterans, their families, and first responders.

“Our mission is we try not forget anybody,” said Word.

Anything that supports military and law enforcement veterans, I don’t see a better need in this world than that,” said Tim Harry, CEO & Founder of Severance Security.
