Carry the Load: Never forgetting those who gave their all

Parked on Mobile Bay — the USS Alabama is a symbol of patriotic strength. The “Mighty A” is also a huge draw for Gulf Coast visitors.

“It’s fantastic — just to see the battleship itself. But to see all of the other things here too — the B52, and the memorial here — fantastic,” said Neil Redmerski.

Neil Redmerski and his wife are visiting from South Carolina. Neil was raised in a military family. Their visit to Battleship Memorial Park began at the Korean War Memorial — a war his father Benjamin and uncle Adam both fought in.

“My father was a lifer — he was a 20 year guy. My father was in Korea and World War II. And my uncle died in Korea,” said Neil.

It’s that ultimate sacrifice — “Carry the Load” has been putting the spotlight on since 2011. The grassroots effort now coast to coast not only recognizing our the heroes of the red, white, and blue — but also raising money through awareness, continuum of care, and education programs for our nation’s warriors.

As we pause to remember this Memorial Day — the ones who never made it home — military families like Neil — say never forgetting those who served and gave their all — is always close to heart.

“My uncle’s lighter is on my dresser and my dad’s dog tags. I see it every day,” said Neil.
