About Ralph Johnson

Private First Class Ralph Henry Johnson was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroic actions in the Vietnam War. After shouting a warning to his fellow Marines, he threw himself onto an explosive device, sacrificing his life to save another Marine and protect his unit’s position. He had been in Vietnam just two months and 19 days.

Those who served with Johnson remember him as quiet, giving and dependable. He carried out every task asked of him with care and commitment, earning the respect of his peers through steady courage and selfless service. His character was defined not by words, but by his unwavering sense of duty.

His legacy lives on in the institutions that bear his name. The Charleston VA hospital was renamed in his honor in 1991, and the USS Ralph Johnson, a guided missile destroyer, was commissioned in 2018 to carry his name and sacrifice into every sea.
