Flight Officer Leonard Eugene Holmes served in the United States Army Air Corps after enlisting in April 1941 and earning his wings in 1942. Assigned to the 437th Bomber Squadron, 391st Bomber Group, he flew as co-pilot of a B-26 Marauder. On his 48th mission over Italy, his aircraft was crippled by enemy fire, forced down at sea and attacked, killing him and his crew.

He was remembered as a determined young airman who embraced service with courage and commitment. As the oldest of three brothers, he carried a strong sense of responsibility, earning respect for his dedication and steady presence in the face of danger.
