About John A. Chapman

Technical Sergeant John A. Chapman, United States Air Force, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism as a Special Tactics combat controller during operations on Takur Ghar, Afghanistan. Voluntarily reinserting into a known enemy stronghold to rescue a fallen teammate, he charged through heavy fire, assaulted and cleared an enemy bunker, then advanced again to attack a second position from an exposed location. Despite being gravely wounded, he continued to fight multiple enemy forces, sacrificing his life to protect his team and enable their survival.

Chapman was a fearless warrior and devoted teammate whose courage under fire defined his character. He moved toward danger without hesitation, placing the lives of others above his own and demonstrating unwavering determination, strength and selflessness in the face of overwhelming odds.

Chapman’s legacy is one of unparalleled valor and sacrifice. His Medal of Honor stands as a testament to actions that saved the lives of his fellow service members and exemplified the highest traditions of military service, inspiring future generations to serve with the same courage and commitment.
