March in downtown Indianapolis honors fallen veterans

Hundreds marched across Indianapolis on Thursday as part of a nationwide relay.

It was all to honor fallen veterans.

Carry The Load sought to raise awareness of Memorial Day’s true meaning, and honor the sacrifices of our military and first responders. Military Park was one of the key stops on the journey.

“A lot of the people that are here are here because they are either a veteran who has lost people, or they are a family that has lost loved ones,” said Keisha Germano, co-chair of the Indiana Vets Chapter in Indiana for JPMorgan Chase. “It is incredibly vital that we come together and honor those people.”

The Carry the Load Memorial Day campaign started with a presentation of colors, followed by the National Anthem and the playing of Taps. As a military spouse, Germano understands firsthand the sacrifices involved, with her husband having dedicated a decade to the U.S. Marines.

“These people gave their lives for everyone here,” Germano said. “We are free in the United States because of our military. I am so grateful to them, and I want to make sure that we never forget anyone who has lost their life to keep us free in this country.”

More than 300 people walked in remembrance for those who have served.

“My husband got out of the military because there was an explosion and he lost some of his platoon, he lost his friends whom he considered family, and it was extremely difficult for him,” Germano said. “Being able to come out here and have this opportunity, we can share stories and support one another. It’s so important.”

Since its start in 2011, Carry The Load has raised over $46 million. Participants walked more than two miles, carrying the load for those who could no longer.

“Having those connections is extremely vital for our veterans and their families,” Germano said.
