Carry The Load’s remembrance walk honors fallen heroes and families in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The national non-profit Carry The Load continued their walk around Battleship Memorial Park to honor our fallen heroes.

Carry The Load works to preserve the meaning of Memorial Day by uniting Americans through these community gatherings and storytelling. They started in West Point, New York, participating in several walks of remembrance throughout the country.

“My name is Riley Staff, and I carry,” said one woman with Carry The Load. “And I carry Staff Sergeant Zackary Barton out of West Jordan, Utah.”

Organizers, sponsors and community members stepped on stage to say whose load they were carrying. Carry The Load is part of Memorial May, a walk of remembrance.

“It’s heartbreaking because they all come with a story of someone who’s died in the line of duty,” said Sandy Sansing of Sandy Sansing Automotive. “And I did serve in the army, and I did see people who died. It’s heartbreaking, but it’s wonderful that people do come out to support Memorial May and support our fallen soldiers.”

Chief Meteorologist Jason Smith opened the ceremony, introducing speakers who gave powerful speeches about Carry The Load’s mission. Sponsors and attendees connected with veterans to make sure they’re getting the resources they need.

“They served our country, and it’s our opportunity to serve them, and at Hope for All Gulf Coast, this is how we do it,” said CEO of Hope for All Gulf Coast Derek Boulware. “We try to make sure there are no homeless veterans on the streets of Mobile.”

One of Carry The Load’s team members, who has been traveling across the country by bus for a month, said storytelling is a way of healing for many veterans and their families.

“It is one of the most heartwrenching experiences ever, and I mean in that in a good way,” she said. “I’m meeting so many different people who just want to share those stories of their loved ones. Of their moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, brothers or sisters that they’ve lost. And that’s a way they can heal, to share those stories with us.”

And during the walk, that’s exactly what happened as veterans shared their stories with the community.

“There’s no way to describe how bad it hurts my heart when you see that soldier loaded on an airplane, and it even hurt worse when it’s someone’s daughter or it could’ve been someone’s wife or granddaughter,” said Johnny Englett.

“I had a great conversation with someone I’d never known from another state and it was really nice to be able to connect with someone outside of Alabama,” said Garrid Durrell Crosby.

“I try to remember all the good stuff,” said Gordon Harrell. “But then I try to remember the ones who didn’t make it back. The ones who sacrificed for what we’re doing.”
