About Bernard Lee Deghand

Master Sergeant Bernard L. Deghand started his Army career in 1982 as Cannon Crewmember (13B). Ten years later, he became an Infantry Rifleman (11B). During Operation Enduring Freedom, he served as a trainer for the Afghan Army, teaching mechanized infantry tactics using armored personnel carriers. He died in a firefight in Spira, Afghanistan.

Known mostly by his family and friends as “Bernie,” Deghand led an authentic, loyal, and dedicated life of service to his country for nearly a quarter-century before his death. He loved his country and his family. He left behind his wife, Lisa, a stepson, Craig, and two daughters, Jami and Emma.
