About Robert J. “Corky” Grothaus II

KIA May 14, 1968 – Long An Province, South Vietnam, Company D, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade Posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device.

Excerpted from the Award announcement: On May 14, 1968, PFC Grothaus was serving as a Radio Telephone Operator on an ambush when two flanks came under intense enemy small arms and rocket fire. As the enemy moved forward under cover of darkness and a driving rain, PFC Grothaus quickly moved into action assisting the pla-toon leader in directing the platoon’s deployment.

Undaunted by the withering fire, PFC Grothaus continued moving about the area relaying his platoon leader’s orders to his men. As he persisted in his valiant efforts he was struck down and mortally wounded. Because of his courageous actions, his comrades were able to quickly re-organize and repel the determined enemy attack.
