Army Sergeant First Class Paul R. Smith served with the 11th Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, and was killed while leading a counterattack near Baghdad International Airport during the Iraq War. Facing a large enemy force, he organized a defense, evacuated wounded soldiers and manned a .50-caliber machine gun, remaining exposed under fire to prevent his unit from being overrun. His actions saved at least 100 service members and earned him the Medal of Honor (the first awarded in the Iraq War).
Smith was a courageous and selfless leader who always placed his soldiers before himself. Calm under fire, he led with strength, determination and unwavering commitment, inspiring those around him in the most dangerous moments.
His legacy lives on through the lives he saved and the soldiers he inspired. The Medal of Honor awarded in his name and the leadership award that bears his name stand as lasting tributes to his courage, sacrifice and devotion to duty.
