Florida, US flags to fly at half-staff for Patriot Day. What to know

PALM BEACH, Fla. (Yahoo! News) – Flags will be flying at half-staff Thursday, Sept. 11, across Florida and the United States for Patriot Day.

Twenty-four years ago, on Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists launched an attack on American soil, killing almost 3,000 people in New York City, Washington, D.C., and in a Pennsylvania field.

The attacks were “by far the deadliest terrorist attacks ever launched against the United States.”

Patriot Day honors the memory of those victims and recognizes the courage of the first responders and service members who served in the wake of the attacks.

Carry The Load, national non-profit veteran and first responder service organization, will partner with the National Cemetery Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs, to offer a way for Americans to honor those who have served the U.S.

A National Day of Service and Remembrance offers volunteers an opportunity to clean headstones and beautify national cemeteries across the U.S. “in tribute to our military, veterans, first responders, and their families.”

“Patriot Day is a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice shown by our first responders and military on 9/11 and beyond,” said Stephen Holley, co-founder, president, and CEO of Carry The Load and veteran U.S. Navy SEAL.

“By coming together to serve our communities and honor stories of the fallen, we ensure their legacy lives on, and we remind ourselves that freedom is never free.”

Florida National Cemeteries participating in the National Day of Service and Remembrance include:

Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, 5525 U.S. 1, Mims, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Sept. 11
Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Ave., Bushnell, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Sept. 11
Bay Pines National Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., St. Petersburg, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Sept. 11
Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road, 72, Sarasota, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Sept. 11
