Paying back and paying it forward on Patriot Day

MINNEAPOLIS (KARE 11) — Armed with buckets of soapy water, scrub brushes and a bit of elbow grease, hundreds of volunteers descended on Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Thursday to clean hundreds of headstones.

“You got to pay it back to those who went before you,” said Brian Marren, a volunteer organizer with Carry the Load – a nonprofit veterans organization that helped organize the event. It was a part of a nationwide effort at more than 60 other National Cemeteries to help beautify their grounds.

Marren says the event is a great way to not only honor the fallen but keep their names alive. He added, “Names fade, and unless a community shows up to restore them, this simple act turns gratitude into evidence. A name you can read, a story you can tell, a life you can teach. It gives families and future visitors a clear place to stand and remember.”

Among the hundreds of volunteers was Marine Veteran Steve Moser. “It makes me feel good that you’re part of a, maybe a small part of society who actually still, honors our veterans and are willing to put their time i.”

“Been a pretty easy cleaning… my kitchen floor’s much worse,” Moser said while scrubbing grit and grime off one gravestone.

“If I knew about this a long time ago, I’d have probably been out here every single year doing this,” said Minnesota Guardsman Luke Karschnik. For Karschnik, it was his second year in a row participating in the event.

He added, “I just think that it’s a great experience. And I think that’s, you know, part of being American. You know, it’s giving back to the ones who serve.”
