‘Carry The Load’ looks to raise money for veterans with cross-country walk

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Carry The Load, a non-profit that started in 2011, is hosting a walk that goes through the Permian Basin and covers 48 states and more than 20,000 miles, all in an effort to raise money for veterans and their families.

Participants walking this weekend are carrying the names of fallen soldiers to memorialize them after they’ve passed.

“Carry The Load is a non0profit organization that connects Americans to the sacrifices made by our veterans, military first responders, and our families. And what we do is that we want to continue to raise awareness about what Memorial Day truly is. And by doing so, we have a national relay that spans over 20,000 miles and 48 states where we connect with communities like Odessa,” said Carry The Load Leg Captain Mario Salazar.

“So, Carry The Load’s mission is to provide an active way to connect everyday Americans to the sacrifices by our military first responders and their veterans. We do that by walking. We’ve been walking across the country, starting on May second in Seattle. We’ve been walking all the way here to beautiful Odessa, Texas. We’re going to Dallas right before Memorial Day. The Sunday before Memorial Day, we’ll be going to Dallas with the rest of our teams across the country. All five teams come together for a big celebration on Memorial Day to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” said West Coast Relay Manager Colton Morrow.

There are five legs across the country, with the walk ending in Dallas right before Memorial Day, where all five teams will meet up.
