About Matthew “Matty” Nierstedt

Petty Officer Third Class Matthew “Matty” Nierstedt, U.S. Navy veteran, served four years as a Crash and Salvage Crewman, deploying twice to the Persian Gulf in support of the Global War on Terrorism. After his service, he became a firefighter in Jersey City, New Jersey, honoring his family’s legacy. While on duty, he died in a car crash delivering toys for a holiday drive.

Matty was known for his infectious laughter and a smile that lit up every room. Loyal and selfless, he was a steady force in the lives of his family and friends. He was the kind of person who lifted others up and made everyone feel seen, valued and loved.

Serving both country and community defined who he was. Whether in uniform or on duty as a firefighter, Matty always ran toward danger to protect others. His final act, helping those in need, is a reflection of a life lived with courage, compassion and heart.
