First Lieutenant Gwilym J. Newman joined the Army in June 2004 after graduating from Frostburg University and commissioned in 2005 from O.C.S. He served with 1st Cav 2/8 Demon Company the entire time. He died of wounds sustained from enemy fire while on dismounted patrol in Tarmiyah, Iraq. Gwilym was a larger than life personality. He was a champion science fair winner with a love of all thing’s superhero related. A natural goofball, he could light up a room with his smile and laugh. Most of all, he was a proud family man who loved with all his heart. His legacy is love and strength. He would want everyone to live life to the fullest and to never forget to let people know how much you love and appreciate them. He would also say to never give up. No matter how challenging life can get, keep fighting one step at a time.
