Private First Class Martin Rutkowski first enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1935 and was stationed in Hawaii, after which, he was honorably discharged. In March of 1942, he was called up to serve again during World War II, first serving in North Africa, then in the invasion of Italy, where he was killed by a low flying bomber.

Rutkowski was described by his Commander as a soldier who was always ready to go, to do his job, and anything else asked of him. He was known for his good nature and sense of humor and was always quick with a joke and a smile.

“My Uncle Marty will always be remembered for his willingness to step up to the plate no matter how daunting the challenge, and do what needed to be done with a good attitude and a smile,” recalled his niece, Lorraine Dunn.
