Fallen Hero’s Hometown and State: Madison, WI
Branch of Service: United States Army
Rank: Army Corporal
Army Corporal Rachael Lorraine Hugo joined the U.S. Army reserves in hopes of becoming a nurse. She was assigned to the 89th Military Police Brigade, Jackson, Michigan, and deployed to Iraq as a combat medic. Cpl. Hugo died October 5 in Bayji, Iraq, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked using improvised explosive devices and small-arms fire.
Rachael was a soldier of soldiers. She did her job every day and saved numerous lives and impacted everyone who knew her in a positive way. Her smile and personality lit up the darkest of times and her heart was in everything she did. Rachael’s last leave ended on Memorial Day 2007 when she returned to Iraq to complete her tour of duty.
Cpl. Hugo was never content staying behind while her guys were on missions. She always volunteered to go on patrol in case someone got hurt and acquired the nickname “Combat Barbie” by her fellow soldiers. Rachael gave this country everything she had, including her life, because she believed in it and loved it.
