Kristin McLain
Fallen Hero’s Hometown and State: Austin, TX
Branch of Service: Fire and Rescue
Rank: Flight Nurse
Kristin McLain began her service as a flight nurse with Flight for Life Colorado. In 2008, she accepted a position with STAR Flight as a Flight RN and Crew Chief, performing highly specialized emergency response services in Central Texas. During a hoist rescue, Kristin was being lifted to the aircraft with the patient when she fell and died at the scene from injuries sustained in the fall.
Kristin had a grace and passion about her for helping and serving others. That, combined with her love of the outdoors and athletic lifestyle, led Kristin to help organize the first Get Out Girl Paddle Jam in 2014, to inspire and empower women and girls to get out, get active, and get connected.
A truly giving person, Kristin often volunteered and fundraised for local nonprofits. After her death, Kristin’s family and friends started the nonprofit organization Operation Get Out in her honor, which supports frontline and first responders, military, and family members through challenges by using the outdoors for recreational therapy for positive mental and physical wellness impact.
