James Nicholas “Nick” Sloan
Fallen Hero’s Hometown and State: Dallas, TX
Branch of Service: United States Marine Corps
Rank: Sergeant
Sergeant James “Nick” Sloan enlisted in the US Marines immediately after high school and served his country from 1997–2002. Sgt. Sloan deployed to Japan and Guantanamo Bay after 9/11. Following his military service, he used his expertise in the areas of security, public safety, and emergency planning in his profession and in continued service of his community.
Nick was a leader and protector by nature—whether safeguarding his country, his workplace, his community, or his beloved family. Sgt. Sloan’s biggest battle was with ALS. He fought with courage and perseverance for 1,017 days and will be remembered for his passionate advocacy for veterans, raw vulnerability about his ALS journey, and his example of personal strength.
The fact that veterans are two times as likely to develop ALS than individuals who have not served in the military led Nick to create the #AttackLifeFoundation. His hope was to create awareness of the correlation between ALS and veterans. Nick’s legacy serves as a testament to his desire to serve and improve his community.
