Fallen Hero’s Hometown and State: Rockville, MD
Branch of Service: United States Army
Rank: LTC
LTC James Walton graduated from the US Military Academy in 1989 and had served a tour in Iraq prior to being deployed to Afghanistan as a combat advisor/MiTT Team Leader. LTC Walton lead transition teams based in Kabul and Kandahar. He was initially commissioned in Aviation, but subsequently became an infantry officer. His life epitomized USMA’s motto “Duty, Honor.Country”.
LTC Walton always lead his teams from the front–living the Infantry’s “Follow Me” motto. He cared deeply about the soldiers he served with and always looked out for their well-being. He easily earned the loyalty of those who served with him. He was deeply compassionate–organizing efforts to bring blankets, food, clothing and toys to Afghan children.
He possessed an unrivaled zest for life and when not wearing the uniform, he enjoyed sport parachute jumping and, together with his wife Sarah, planned to adopt children. LTC Walton’s legacy lives on in the soldiers with whom he served. He was a shining example of leadership, positive energy and confidence. During chaotic and stressful missions, he
was a rock.
