Erik S. Kristensen
Fallen Hero’s Hometown and State: San Diego , CA
Branch of Service: United States Navy
Rank: LCDR
On 28 June 2005 in Afghanistan, Erik volunteered to lead a mission to help four fellow friends and SEALs who had come under heavy fire. The helicopter that he, seven other SEAL members, and eight Army Special Forces members were in was shot down.
A 1995 graduate of the US Naval Academy, LCDR Kristensen was a humble leader who was admired and respected by his fellow SEALs. Overcoming injury and obstacles, at the age of 27 Erik finally realized his dream and became a SEAL, and would later join SEAL Team 10 based at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creekin Norfolk, VA.
Erik was buried with full honors at the Naval Academy and rests among our nation’s heroes as one of them. His story is told through the book and movie, Lone Survivor. Erik (known as “Spider” by his classmates and teammates), was a scholar, played football and lacrosse in high school, and rowed on the CREW team at Annapolis. Following graduation, he was an English instructor at the Academy.
