Alwyn C. Cashe
Fallen Hero’s Hometown and State: Winter Park , FL
Branch of Service: United States Army
Rank: SFC
SFC Cashe’s Bradley was struck by an IED. While soaked in fuel, SFC Cashe rushed to the back of the vehicle, reaching into the hot flames and started pulling out his soldiers. The flames gripped his fuel soaked uniform.
Flames quickly spread all over his body. Despite the terrible pain and the threat from enemy small arms fire, SFC Cashe placed the injured soldier on the ground and returned to the burning vehicle to retrieve another burning soldier; all the while, he was still on fire. SFC Cashe didn’t stop for aid until all his soldiers were evacuated.
SFC Cashe was a soldier’s soldier. He was great to talk with, and drew respect from everyone around him. He is the highest example of living the Army’s values. He was a true leader, and inspired greatness in his soldiers. There is an ongoing effort to have him posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
