Upcoming National Day of Service and Remembrance Sept 11

The Keokuk National Cemetery announces that in honor of 9/11, Patriot Day, the public is encouraged to spare some of their time to participate in the National Day of Service and Remembrance, which will be held at the Cemetery beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 11. As a way to honor and remember those who served our country, volunteers are invited to join together with thousands across the country to clean headstones and beautify the VA National Cemeteries. According to the VA, this activity “is a great service opportunity for employee engagement, youth groups and individuals.” Carry the Load, a 501 ©(3) charity, has joined forces with the VA National Cemeteries to support this event.

Cemetery Caretaker Supervisor Brent Inskeep gave the following message about the National Day of Service and Remembrance: “We look forward to any volunteers that would like to participate and join in honoring our nation’s heroes. If any volunteers have a 5-gallon bucket and a scrub brush they are encouraged to bring them with as we have limited supplies.”

Location wise, Keokuk National Cemetery can be found at 1701 J Street in Keokuk, Iowa. Those who will be in the Quincy, Illinois area on Sept. 11 also are encouraged to attend at Quincy National Cemetery (located at 36th and Maine streets in Quincy, Illinois).

“For the Keokuk location all volunteers are recommended to meet at the admin office on the western portion of the cemetery,” Inskeep relayed. “For Quincy all volunteers will meet in the parking lot of the Quincy National Cemetery.”

Dress will be casual but should show politeness and reverence, as the Cemetery is the place of final repose for so many of our nation’s veterans. Because the event is outside, participants should be mindful of the weather, but no open toe shoes or tank tops. Children under age 14 should have an adult accompany them and pets should respectfully be kept at home.
